challenge
MaxPreps, a CBS property, was faced with a deprecated product no longer meeting the demands of high school sports fans & college recruiters. One of these major changes was the emergence of the high school sports star, most notable Bronny James. These athletes & their parents now wanted to control their narrative through adding missing stats, highlighting awards, and adding personal interests.
In addition to the athletes wanting more features, fans also lacked the ability to easily follow their favorite local teams and players. Prior to redesign users only followed an average of .4 teams without the ability to follow a player.
How can we make a high school platform that competes with the pros?
solultion
I led the MaxPreps team in conducting interviews with coaches, athletes, parents and recruiters in order to better understand each of their unique needs. We turned these learnings into a set of requirements we sketched, prototyped and tested with users. These insights led to a complete redesign of the MaxPreps app (iOS + Android).
Players can now personalize their profiles with stats, video highlights, and even favorite gear. Making MaxPreps the profile parents, athlete and recruiters value the most.
Fans are greeted with an onboarding experience that allows them to easily follow local teams and players including national stars. Improving the average number of follows from .4 to 1.7. A new Favorites tab, improved notifications, and scoreboards all provide quick access to regional scores and standings, ensuring fans stay up to date on what matters most.
The redesign's success is highlighted by its peak as the number three sports app on the iOS App Store, surpassing the NFL and NBA official apps.
